Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) President Thol. Thirumavalavan has raised strong objections against actor-turned-political leader Vijay, for remaining silent after social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy was allegedly insulted during the recent Hindu Munnani’s Murugan Maanadu event.
Thirumavalavan’s Criticism
Speaking at a party gathering, Thirumavalavan said:
“Vijay calls himself an ideological leader. But when Periyar, who laid the foundation for social justice in Tamil Nadu, is insulted at a public forum, he chooses silence. Why is he not condemning it?”
Thirumavalavan questioned how someone aspiring to lead with principles could ignore an attack on a key figure in Tamil Nadu’s rationalist and Dravidian legacy.
Background of the Controversy
During the Murugan Maanadu organized by Hindu Munnani, a right-wing religious group, certain remarks made by speakers were perceived as derogatory towards Periyar, who is widely respected for his anti-caste and rationalist movements.
While several leaders condemned the comments, Vijay and his party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), maintained silence — something Thirumavalavan says is not acceptable for someone who claims to stand for social justice and equality.
Political Implications
Thirumavalavan’s remarks are seen as an early challenge to Vijay’s political positioning. With Vijay preparing for a full-fledged political entry, silence on such issues could impact how progressive voters and youth view his ideological clarity.
Observers note that as Vijay steps into politics, he will face increasing scrutiny from leaders across the spectrum — especially on matters related to Dravidian values, social reform, and secularism.
Thirumavalavan’s criticism marks a significant moment in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape, where emerging leaders are being called out not just for action — but also for their silence on sensitive socio-political matters. Whether Vijay responds remains to be seen, but the debate on ideological commitment has clearly been ignited.
