Vijay, founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), addressed the controversy surrounding the divorce petition filed by his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam for the first time in public during a Women’s Day event held in Mamallapuram.
Speaking before party cadres and supporters, Vijay briefly referred to the ongoing speculation about his personal life and urged them not to worry about the issue. Without directly discussing the details of the legal case, he reassured supporters that the matter would be handled by him.
“Please don’t worry about the recent problems surrounding me. Those issues are not worth your time,” Vijay said while addressing the gathering. He added that he would deal with the situation personally and asked supporters not to feel distressed over it.
Vijay further told party workers that what troubled him most was seeing them emotionally affected by the issue. “I will take care of them myself. What hurts me the most is seeing you feel sad or stressed because of my problems,” he said, urging them not to carry that burden and instead focus on larger public causes.
The actor-turned-politician also appealed to his supporters to concentrate on social welfare and political goals rather than his personal life. He emphasised that their energy should be directed toward the work of the party and the welfare of people.
The comments marked the first time Vijay publicly acknowledged the controversy after reports emerged that Sangeetha had filed a divorce petition before a family court in Chengalpattu. According to reports, the petition seeks dissolution of their marriage under the Special Marriage Act and includes allegations of infidelity and mental cruelty.
Vijay and Sangeetha married in 1999 and have two children. The divorce petition, filed earlier, has drawn significant public attention in Tamil Nadu’s political and film circles, especially as Vijay prepares his party for the upcoming Assembly elections.
