Chennai Super Kings’ preparations for IPL 2026 have taken a significant hit. Australian pacer Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the entire tournament after sustaining a hamstring injury during a training session, leaving the five-time champions scrambling for a replacement with their campaign opener just eleven days away.
The development was confirmed by CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, who did not mince words about the scale of the setback. “It is a big blow for us. Ellis is a crucial bowler, especially in the death overs. We are looking at replacements,” Viswanathan told Sportstar. The finality of the statement no timeframe offered, no hope held out makes clear that Ellis’s season is over before it began.
The timing is particularly difficult for CSK to absorb. Ellis had been earmarked as a key component of the franchise’s pace attack, and crucially, as the man who could fill the sizable void left by Sri Lankan express bowler Matheesha Pathirana, who departed for Kolkata Knight Riders in a ₹18 crore deal ahead of this season’s auction. Pathirana’s death-over abilities his slinging action, pace, and wide-yorker variations were central to CSK’s plans for several seasons. Ellis was seen as the closest available replacement in terms of skillset, a hard-hitting death specialist capable of defending and attacking in equal measure.
With Ellis now also unavailable, CSK’s death-bowling options look considerably thinner than they had hoped. New Zealand pacer Matt Henry is expected to be the primary overseas pace option in the playing XI. Henry brings credibility 53 wickets in 43 T20Is at an economy of 8.50 across his international career but his IPL record is a cause for concern. His last IPL appearance was for Lucknow Super Giants in 2024, where he managed a solitary wicket across four matches at an economy rate of 9.16. More pertinently, his strengths lie with the new ball rather than in the death overs, which is precisely where CSK now have a structural weakness.
England’s Jamie Overton has been mentioned as another potential replacement option. Overton is a competent seam bowler with pace to trouble batters, but he has limited T20 franchise experience and has not played IPL cricket before which makes him a high-risk selection for one of the competition’s most demanding roles.
The Ellis injury adds to an already challenging pre-season mood around CSK. The franchise finished bottom of the table in IPL 2025 their worst-ever IPL campaign winning just four out of 14 matches. The arrival of Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals and a deliberate focus on building a deep all-rounder battery were designed to signal a fresh start. But a pace attack that was already thin has now been further depleted, and the pressure on Ruturaj Gaikwad’s side to deliver results quickly is immense.
CSK’s opening fixture is against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati and in a twist that adds further drama, that very game will see Samson face his former franchise for the first time.
The franchise has confirmed it is actively identifying a replacement for Ellis. Given the 24-hour window that the IPL rulebook allows for replacements to be named and cleared, a decision is expected imminently.

Who Could Replace Ellis?
With CSK’s death-bowling resources now stretched perilously thin, the franchise will be looking at a pool of available overseas pacers capable of stepping into Ellis’s shoes at short notice. South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee a tall, right-arm quick with a slingy action and a natural ability to generate awkward bounce stands out as the most like-for-like replacement. West Indian duo Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph are also credible options; Shamar brings raw hostility and an ability to skid the ball through at pace, while Alzarri an IPL veteran has the experience of operating in pressure situations across multiple franchise stints. Australian left-armer Jason Behrendorff offers a different dimension with his ability to angle the ball into right-handers at the death, making him a difficult customer to hit cleanly a quality CSK’s management will have noted. Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi, arguably the most complete new-ball and death bowler on the available pool, would be the most exciting acquisition of the lot, given his precise yorker-based arsenal and ability to swing the ball both ways at pace. Any one of these five would meaningfully strengthen CSK’s attack; the question now is which name Ruturaj Gaikwad’s management can secure before the March 30 deadline.
