Tamil Nadu Budget 2026-27: Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu on Friday announced that the State’s Interim Budget for the financial year 2026–27 will be presented on February 17. The budget will be tabled by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu in the Legislative Assembly ahead of the upcoming State elections. The Assembly session will commence at 9.30 a.m.
On the same day, the Interim Financial Statement for the financial year 2026–27 will also be presented in the House.
Addressing reporters, Speaker Appavu said, “The Finance Minister will also present before the Assembly the demand for advance grants for the year 2026–27 and additional expenditure for 2025–26 for its approval on February 20.”
He further added that the Business Advisory Committee would meet shortly to decide the exact number of days for the forthcoming Assembly session.
Responding to questions on the uninterrupted live telecast of the entire Assembly proceedings, Appavu said, “We are currently telecasting the Question Hour and the Ministers’ replies live. Soon, we will also livestream the debates on demands for grants. This decision will be taken by the Business Advisory Committee and therefore cannot be discussed with the media at this stage.”
The Speaker also addressed repeated complaints from Opposition parties regarding interruptions during the live telecast of their speeches. He clarified that every Member of the Legislative Assembly is allotted a designated time to present their views and that these speeches are being telecast live without interruption.
Earlier, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu had criticised the Union Budget 2026–27, calling it a major disappointment for the people of Tamil Nadu. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “There were no clear announcements addressing key sectors such as the basic developmental needs of the state, employment, education, healthcare, and industrial investment. The long-standing and legitimate demands consistently raised by the Tamil people have once again been ignored. Tamil Nadu, which plays a significant role in the development of the nation, has not been given its rightful share. This budget stands as one that has completely disregarded the expectations of the Tamil people. For the people who were hoping for change, what they have received is nothing but disappointment.”
The presentation of the interim budget is expected to set the tone for the State’s financial priorities ahead of the Assembly elections.
