ICC Men’s T20 World Cup saw another dramatic net run-rate finish as Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in their final Super Eight match but still failed to qualify for the semifinals.

Batting first, Pakistan posted 212 for 8 in 20 overs, riding on a dominant opening stand that laid the foundation for a big total. The openers put Sri Lanka’s bowlers under pressure early, taking Pakistan past 64 inside the powerplay. Sri Lanka’s bowlers managed to pull things back slightly at the death, conceding only 38 runs in the final four overs, but Pakistan still finished with a total that kept their qualification hopes alive.

In reply, Sri Lanka mounted a strong chase and remained in contention until the final over. They reached 207 for 6 in 20 overs.

Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by five runs, but the narrow victory was not enough to take them into the semifinals.

Net Run Rate Ends Pakistan’s Campaign

Despite the victory, Pakistan’s fate depended on net run rate. They finished the Super Eight stage level on points with New Zealand, but New Zealand’s superior net run rate proved decisive. New Zealand officially confirmed their semifinal berth.

Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha later reflected on the campaign, saying the team “put itself under pressure early in the tournament,” adding that qualification “slipped away because of small margins.”

South Africa Book Semifinal Spot

In the other Super Eight group, South Africa had already sealed qualification for the semifinals. The final semifinal place will be decided in the Super Eight clash between India and West Indies, on Sunday.
