IND vs ENG | With the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled between India and England at Wankhede Stadium on March 5, weather and rain rules have become a central talking point as the knockout match approaches. The International Cricket Council has specific procedures in place in case rain affects play or stops the game.
Under the tournament regulations, a reserve day has been scheduled for March 6 should rain interrupt play on the original match day. On the scheduled day of the semi-final, officials are permitted extra playing time of up to 90 minutes to try to complete the match, and on the reserve day, up to 120 minutes extra time can be used to get a result. If play begins but cannot reach a conclusion due to weather, match officials will use these available periods to ensure a minimum number of overs are bowled by each team.
For a semi-final or final fixture to constitute a valid match, each side must bat for at least 10 overs, even if the contest is shortened by rain. If this minimum is not achieved on the first day, play would be continued from the same point on the reserve day.

The most significant scenario arises if rain prevents any meaningful play on both the scheduled day and the reserve day. In that case, there would be no Super Over or alternative tiebreaker to decide the outcome. Instead, the team that finished higher in the Super 8 stage standings will automatically advance to the final, as laid down in the ICC playing conditions for knockout matches.
In the ongoing tournament, England finished top of their Super 8 group, while India ended second in theirs. As a result, if the India vs England semi-final is completely washed out on both days, England would progress to the final on the basis of their superior Super 8 ranking, and India would be eliminated without a result being played.
Current weather forecasts for Mumbai on March 5, the day of the semi-final, do not predict rain during the match hours, and skies are expected to remain clear.
