According to the schedule released by the Election Commission, the election process will begin with the issue of the Gazette notification on March 30, 2026 (Monday), which formally marks the start of the nomination process. The last date for filing nominations is April 6, 2026 (Monday). This will be followed by the scrutiny of nominations on April 7, 2026 (Tuesday), during which the submitted papers will be examined to ensure candidates meet the required criteria.

Candidates who wish to withdraw from the race will be allowed to do so until April 9, 2026 (Thursday).

Polling across the state will then be conducted on April 23, 2026 (Thursday), when voters will cast their ballots to elect representatives for all 234 constituencies. The counting of votes will be held on May 4, 2026 (Monday).

With the announcement of the election timetable, political parties and alliances are expected to intensify their campaign preparations in the coming weeks.

Current Political Landscape in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu’s political arena ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections is largely shaped by alliances led by the state’s two dominant Dravidian parties, M. K. Stalin’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). While these two fronts continue to dominate the electoral landscape, new political forces and regional parties are also attempting to reshape the state’s traditional bipolar politics.

The ruling DMK leads the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which includes parties such as the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and the Indian Union Muslim League. The DMK-led alliance has performed strongly in the past elections, winning 159 seats in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election and sweeping all parliamentary seats in the state in 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The main opposition front is led by the AIADMK under Edappadi K. Palaniswami. For the 2026 election, the party has reunited with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), forming a broader opposition alliance that also includes the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK).

Apart from the two main alliances, new and smaller parties are also seeking to influence the electoral contest. Actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is emerging as a potential third force, while parties like the Naam Tamilar Katchi continue to contest independently.
