Tamil cinema’s summer season just got a marquee entry. Karuppu, the action drama starring Suriya and directed by RJ Balaji, has been officially confirmed for a theatrical release on May 14, 2026. The announcement positions the film as one of the most anticipated summer offerings in Tamil cinema this year, arriving after a series of scheduling shifts that had originally hinted at a Pongal release before the date was pushed back.
The film marks an on-screen reunion between Suriya and actress Trisha Krishnan after nearly two decades a pairing that has generated considerable excitement among fans of both stars. Their last notable screen pairing was in the early years of their respective careers, making Karuppu a moment of significant nostalgia and curiosity. The supporting cast is equally impressive, featuring Swasika, Indrans, Sshivada, Anagha Maya Ravi, Yogi Babu, Natty Subramaniam, and Supreeth Reddy.
RJ Balaji, who has carved a credible niche as a director following the success of Mookuthi Amman and Veetla Visesham, helms the project marking his most ambitious production yet. The teaser, released on Suriya’s birthday on July 23, 2025, set the tone firmly: this is a mass action drama with a populist, celebratory energy. The teaser presented Suriya in the role of a lawyer a profession the actor memorably portrayed in Jai Bhim but filtered through the lens of a larger-than-life entertainer.
The teaser itself was packed with Easter eggs for longtime Suriya fans. One sequence appeared to recreate the iconic watermelon scene from Ghajini, while the line “ennakku innoru per irukku” (“I have another name too”) directly echoed a legendary dialogue from Rajinikanth’s Baasha a wink to Tamil cinema’s shared heritage of mass hero iconography. Suriya introduces himself as “Saravannan” in the teaser notably his given name and the footage closes with the tag, “A Feast By TEAM RJB.”
Behind the camera, the film has strong technical credentials. Cinematography is by GK Vishnu, who previously shot Jawan and Mersal, while the screenplay has been written by a team comprising Ashwin Ravichandran, Rahul Raj, T.S. Gopi Krishnan, and Karan Aravind Kumar. The film is produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu under the Dream Warrior Pictures banner, one of Tamil cinema’s most respected production houses.
For Suriya, Karuppu arrives at a meaningful juncture. His last theatrical outing was Retro, a romantic gangster drama directed by Karthik Subbaraj. Looking further ahead, the actor’s slate is equally interesting: a romantic drama titled Vishwanath & Sons and a project with director Jithu Madhavan are also in the pipeline, signalling that Suriya intends to remain prolific and creatively adventurous across genres.
For now, though, May 14 belongs to Karuppu and if the teaser is any indication, Tamil cinema’s summer is set to turn a very distinctive shade of black.
