“Fundamentally the Same”: Udhayanidhi Stalin Draws Parallel Between Dravidian Ideology and Islam at Iftar Event

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin stirred fresh political debate when he drew a direct parallel between the principles of Dravidian ideology the philosophical foundation of the ruling DMK and the teachings of Islam. Speaking at a DMK Minorities Welfare Rights Wing Iftar function held at New College in Chennai during the holy month of Ramadan, Udhayanidhi declared that the two belief systems share a fundamentally common moral core.

“The religion that teaches equality, love, and generosity is our Islam. The principles of Dravidian ideology and the principles of Islam are fundamentally the same. As long as brotherhood and unity exist, no matter how many attempts or conspiracies take place, no one will be able to break the relationship between the DMK and the Muslim community,” he said, addressing the gathering.

The speech was delivered in a context that was both religious and unmistakably electoral Tamil Nadu votes on April 23, and both the DMK’s outreach to minority communities and the NDA’s counter-narrative about vote-bank politics have become central threads in the campaign. Udhayanidhi used the occasion to list the welfare initiatives undertaken by the DMK government for Muslims, including the laying of a foundation stone for a new Tamil Nadu Haj House at a cost of ₹39 crore, and reiterated his government’s commitment to the community’s welfare. He also accused the BJP of spreading hatred against Muslims, framing the DMK as a bulwark against divisive politics.

The remarks did not arise in isolation. A day earlier, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin himself had attended a separate Iftar function organised by the DMK’s minority wing at Aminjikarai, where he declared that the bond between the Muslim community and the DMK had “endured across generations” and praised the community for its commitment to charity, compassion, and social harmony.

Nor was this the first time Udhayanidhi had drawn such a parallel. Speaking at a Christmas celebration in Madurai in December 2025, he had made a nearly identical observation about Christianity asserting that its principles of love, compassion, and equality were, at their essence, the same as DMK’s Dravidian principles.

Supporters of the DMK’s approach argue that the statements reflect a consistent ideological position: that the Dravidian movement, rooted in the rationalist and social reformist traditions of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, has always championed human equality and dignity values that resonate with the ethical teachings of multiple religious traditions. From this perspective, Udhayanidhi is not conflating religion with political ideology, but rather highlighting ethical convergences.

Whether the remarks deepen the DMK’s ties with minority communities ahead of April 23, or provide further ammunition to political opponents seeking to frame the party’s secularism as selective, will be tested at the ballot box.
