Tamil Nadu’s film‑to‑politics pipeline is widening again, as popular actor‑director Sundar C prepares for his electoral debut as the NDA candidate from Madurai Central in the 2026 Assembly elections. He will contest under the Puthiya Neethi Katchi (PNK) banner, which is part of the BJP–AIADMK‑led NDA alliance and will use the AIADMK’s “Two Leaves” symbol in the upcoming poll.
From cinema to campaigning
Sundar C, son of veteran producer Chidambaram Pillai, has been a familiar face on screen for over three decades, with credits as an actor, director and producer in numerous Tamil films. His entry into elections is being framed by the PNK and BJP as a move to bring a “people’s person” with a proven connect outside politics, especially in a city where cinema and identity politics often overlap.
His wife, actor and BJP leader Khushbu Sundar, has publicly backed the decision, saying Sundar C wants to serve the people of Tamil Nadu who have supported his film career. She described him as someone who will “give his best” to the electorate and announced that he is contesting with the blessings of his family and senior NDA leaders, including AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and BJP state president Nainar Nagendran.
Up against a DMK stronghold
Madurai Central is presently represented by DMK’s PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan, who holds the portfolio of Information Technology and Digital Services in the state government. The seat is widely regarded as a key DMK bastion, making the PNK‑NDA choice of Sundar C a high‑risk, high‑profile gamble aimed at attracting disenchanted voters and drawing attention through star power.
The PNK, which draws a significant chunk of its support from the Mudaliyar community and traces its ideological roots to the early‑20th‑century Justice Party, sees Madurai Central as a historically resonant constituency. Interestingly, P. T. Rajan, the grandfather of current DMK minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan, was a prominent figure in that same Justice‑Party lineage, adding a layer of political symbolism to the contest.
NDA’s alliance arithmetic
Within the NDA seat‑sharing pact, Madurai Central has been allotted to PNK under the basket of seats reserved for allies other than BJP, even though the symbol on the ballot will be the AIADMK’s “Two Leaves”. This arrangement underlines how the alliance is using regional and caste‑based parties to expand its footprint, while relying on cinematic and familial networks such as the Sundar–Khushbu camp aligned with BJP to project a hybrid image of glamour and grassroots outreach.
If Sundar C manages to leverage his brand and community ties, the Madurai Central race could become one of the most watched battles in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, testing whether star status can dent a well‑entrenched incumbent in a DMK stronghold.
