Where Is Dhoni?: Ruturaj Provides The Most Awaited Answer

The question haunting every CSK fan four matches into IPL 2026 remains the same: where is MS Dhoni, and when is he coming back? Ahead of Chennai Super Kings’ home fixture against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 11, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad provided the most direct update yet and it came with a dash of reassurance.

“For those asking about MS Dhoni, he’s at the hotel watching and supporting us. But yes, very soon, you’ll see him out on the ground,” Gaikwad said, confirming that Dhoni remains in close proximity to the team even as his return to match action is being carefully managed.

The 44-year-old legend has missed all of CSK’s matches so far in IPL 2026, the opening game against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30, the Punjab Kings fixture at Chepauk on April 3, the away game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 5, and now the Delhi Capitals clash due to a calf strain that was confirmed before the tournament began. CSK had initially indicated he would be unavailable for approximately two weeks, but his recovery is taking longer than that initial timeline suggested.

Gaikwad’s update at the toss ahead of the RCB match on April 5 had been cautiously worded: “MS is getting back slowly. Sometimes it takes time. If he’s ready to play, it’ll be soon.” Head coach Stephen Fleming also offered a measured assessment around the same time, saying the team had been “conservative” in his rehabilitation and expressing hope that the five days between the RCB and DC games would go as planned.

Dhoni was spotted batting comfortably in the nets at Chepauk in the practise season, hitting trademark sixes with no visible signs of discomfort which raised hopes among fans that a comeback was imminent. But CSK are clearly taking no chances with a player who has navigated serious knee surgery and multiple physical challenges over the past three seasons. He did not travel with the team to Bengaluru for the RCB game.

The situation is made more complicated by context. CSK are yet to win a match in IPL 2026, and though the batting has shown glimpses of form, the team is languishing at the bottom of the table a repeat of their dismal IPL 2025 campaign that ended in a last-place finish. The presence of Dhoni, even in a limited capacity at the lower order and behind the stumps, carries psychological and strategic weight that no replacement can fully provide.

Sanju Samson has been keeping wickets in Dhoni’s absence with professionalism and assurance, and Dewald Brevis who had himself been sidelined with a side strain — returns for the Delhi Capitals match, giving CSK a welcome boost in batting depth.

The Chepauk crowd on April 11 will be chanting for Dhoni. Whether he answers that call on the day or in the matches that follow, the direction of travel in Gaikwad’s words is clear: the wait is almost over.
