Chennai Super Kings have signed Akash Madhwal as a replacement for injured batter Ayush Mhatre for the remainder of the IPL 2026 season. The franchise confirmed the development on April 23 after Mhatre was ruled out due to a hamstring injury sustained during a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18.

The right-handed batter had shown promise in the opportunities he received this season, scoring 201 runs in six matches at an average of 33.50 and an impressive strike rate of 177.87. His performances at the top of the order had provided Chennai Super Kings with momentum in several matches before his injury setback forced a change in the squad.

Akash Madhwal, a right-arm fast bowler, joins CSK for the remainder of IPL 2026, adding depth to their pace attack. He has prior IPL experience, having represented Mumbai Indians in the 2023 and 2024 seasons and Rajasthan Royals in 2025.

The signing comes at a time when CSK are dealing with multiple challenges in their campaign, including injuries and ongoing team combination adjustments. The replacement alters the squad composition, with the franchise opting to strengthen its bowling resources following the loss of a top-order batter.

The move also follows a major setback to CSK’s pace attack, with Khaleel Ahmed ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a significant right quadricep injury. The left-arm seamer sustained the injury during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 14, dealing a blow to Chennai’s powerplay bowling plans. Khaleel had been a key figure with the new ball, and his absence has further stretched the team’s bowling resources. The resulting lack of consistency in the bowling unit has impacted CSK’s performances, making reinforcements necessary as the tournament progresses.
