The prolonged censor controversy surrounding Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay and directed by H. Vinoth, has finally come to an end. The film’s producers have decided to withdraw their legal case against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), opting to return to the statutory certification process.

The move brings an end to weeks of courtroom battles that delayed the highly anticipated release and drew attention across the Tamil film industry.

Timeline of Key Developments:

Mid-December 2025: The film was submitted to the CBFC. The Examining Committee recommended a UA certificate with minor cuts.

Late December 2025: The producers complied with the suggested edits and resubmitted the film.

Early January 2026: The CBFC referred the film to a Revising Committee after receiving complaints about potentially sensitive content.

January 6, 2026: Frustrated with the delay, the producers filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court seeking immediate certification.

January 9, 2026: A single-judge bench ordered the CBFC to issue a UA certificate. The CBFC challenged this ruling, resulting in a stay by the Division Bench.

January 12–27, 2026: The Supreme Court refused to intervene, and the High Court Division Bench remanded the case for a fresh hearing.

On February 9, 2026, the producers submitted a letter to the Madras High Court withdrawing the writ petition. They will now approach the CBFC Revising Committee for evaluation and certification in line with statutory procedures.

The case is set to be formally marked as withdrawn before Justice P.T. Asha on February 10, 2026.

What’s Next for ‘Jana Nayagan’?

With the court case set to close, Jana Nayagan will now undergo scrutiny by the Revising Committee, whose decision will determine the final certification and any required changes.

While an official release date has not been announced, industry insiders suggest a theatrical release may happen in the coming months once certification is granted.

The film was originally slated for a Pongal 2026 theatrical release.
