Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi has always operated by his own rules choosing characters over commerce, discomfort over familiarity. And judging by the nine films and one web series currently on his plate, that philosophy shows no signs of softening. In a recent freewheeling interaction, the 45-year-old actor opened up about his future projects, confirming his second collaboration with Mani Ratnam, the development of Maharaja 2, and a creative manifesto that is equal parts personal conviction and industry provocation.

The Mani Ratnam Reunion

The most headline-grabbing confirmation was Sethupathi’s reunion with Mani Ratnam their second collaboration after Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018). This time, Sai Pallavi has been roped in as co-lead, adding considerable intrigue to a pairing that already carries enormous expectations. Sethupathi was characteristically candid about working alongside one of Tamil cinema’s most demanding directors, saying: “Mani Ratnam sir is very fast. I told him, Whenever I get a gap, I’ll come over, sir. I’ll read the script with you and try to understand it. We need to keep up with him to deliver.'” He was emphatic that the film will be “completely different” from their previous outing a reassurance that the collaboration will chart new creative territory rather than revisit familiar ground.

Maharaja 2 in the Pipeline

Fans of the 2024 blockbuster Maharaja which became one of Tamil cinema’s biggest hits of the year will be delighted to know that a sequel is confirmed. Sethupathi revealed that director Nithilan Saminathan has already completed the script for Maharaja 2, and that the project is progressing well. No further production details or timelines were disclosed.

The Pocket Novel Project

Also confirmed is Sethupathi’s collaboration with Super Deluxe director Thiagarajan Kumararaja for a project titled Pocket Novel. Sethupathi spoke warmly about the working dynamic, saying: “Working with Thiagarajan Kumararaja gives a different kind of comfort and responsibility. I’m very happy with him. His sense of responsibility is contagious. So I told my team that we need to be extra careful for the next four months. The film is progressing superbly.”

The Broader Slate

Beyond these headline projects, Sethupathi’s confirmed lineup reflects a deliberate spread across genres, platforms, and languages. His most imminent appearance is the web series Muthu Engira Kaattaan (also referred to as Kaattaan), directed by M. Manikandan of Kadaisi Vivasayi fame — a rural action drama set to premiere on JioHotstar from March 27, 2026. He has also completed work on Mysskin’s Pisasu 2, the sequel to the cult 2014 horror film. The Telugu action film Slum Dog: 33 Temple Road, directed by Puri Jagannadh and co-starring Samyuktha and Tabu, is in post-production. Vetrimaaran’s highly anticipated gangster drama Arasan, featuring Silambarasan in the lead, also counts Sethupathi in a key role. He has a cameo in Jailer 2, Nelson Dilipkumar’s sequel to the Rajinikanth blockbuster, scheduled for release on June 12, 2026, alongside an ensemble that includes Mohanlal, Mithun Chakraborty, and Nandamuri Balakrishna. The Train project with Mysskin, featuring Shruti Haasan and Narain, is also slated for release.

No Remakes. No Sequels. No Comfort Zone.

On the question of creative choices, Sethupathi drew a firm line. He said repetition was “death” for him as an actor and ruled out remakes and sequels from his personal priorities a pointed statement, given that Maharaja 2 was confirmed in the same breath. The distinction, it seems, lies in whether the sequel has something genuinely new to say and if Nithilan Saminathan has already finished that script, the director has evidently convinced Sethupathi that it does.

For an actor who once played an accountant in Dubai before stumbling into Tamil cinema, the arc to nine simultaneous films across multiple languages and platforms is staggering. The slate ahead suggests that Vijay Sethupathi has no intention of slowing down and every intention of making each project count.
