Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), led by veteran leader Vaiko, has been allotted four constituencies as part of the DMK-led alliance for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The seat-sharing arrangement was finalised after discussions between leaders of the two parties in Chennai.

Under the agreement, the MDMK will contest three constituencies using the DMK’s symbol, while the party will field its candidate in one constituency under a symbol allotted by the Election Commission of India for MDMK. The arrangement reflects the ruling DMK’s strategy of accommodating alliance partners while retaining a larger share of seats within the coalition.

The development comes as seat-sharing negotiations continue within the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which is preparing for a crucial electoral contest in Tamil Nadu. Several regional and national parties are part of the coalition, and discussions are ongoing to finalise allocations for all alliance partners.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the MDMK contested six constituencies on the DMK’s symbol and secured four victories, contributing to the alliance’s overall win. The new allocation of four seats reflects adjustments made by the coalition leadership to balance the demands of multiple parties ahead of the upcoming polls.

Party leaders indicated that the final list of constituencies to be contested by the MDMK will be announced soon. Meanwhile, talks with other alliance partners are continuing as the coalition moves to complete its electoral strategy.

With the Tamil Nadu Assembly consisting of 234 seats, political parties have intensified negotiations over seat distribution and candidate selection as preparations for the election campaign gather pace.
