Another Blow For CSK: Along With MS Dhoni, Dewald Brevis Also Ruled Out Of CSK’s First Match

Chennai Super Kings have been hit by another injury setback ahead of their IPL 2026 opener, with South African middle‑order batter Dewald Brevis ruled out of the season‑opening clash against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Monday, March 30. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that Brevis has picked up a side strain during training and will miss the first match, adding to the franchise’s list of concerns at the start of the campaign.

Side strain sidelines Brevis

Fleming told reporters that Brevis “had a side injury during training” and is now in the rehabilitation phase, which will keep him out of the RR contest. The New Zealand‑born coach added: “Brevis is out… he’s still heavily involved in the side, but he’s got an injury that we’re getting right, rehabbing. Hopefully it won’t be too long [before he is back].”

The 22‑year‑old, known for his aggressive stroke‑making, had emerged as one of the brighter spots in an otherwise under‑par CSK campaign in IPL 2025, scoring 225 runs in six matches at an average of 37.50 and a strike rate of 180. He has also been in good form internationally, recently representing South Africa in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, where he amassed 207 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 146.80.

Added pressure on CSK’s batting

With CSK already rebuilding their batting order after a disappointing 2025 season, Brevis’ absence in the opening match removes a key accelerator from the middle order at a time when the side needs firepower. The franchise can still call upon him for the second fixture against Punjab Kings on April 3, provided the side strain responds well to treatment, though no definitive timeline has been given by the team management.

CSK’s injury list has been growing in the build‑up to IPL 2026, and the withdrawal of a match‑winning player like Brevis in the first game raises questions about bench strength and the side’s ability to absorb early‑season blows. For skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, the challenge will be to spread the scoring load and ensure that the top and middle order can deliver without relying excessively on individual brilliance, even as the team waits for Brevis to return to full fitness.

In a tournament where the top four games can set the tone for the entire season, CSK’s opening‑round struggle for a stable XI makes the performance against Rajasthan Royals all the more critical not just for points, but for the confidence of a squad still finding its rhythm.
