The question around whether MS Dhoni will return for Chennai Super Kings against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 remains one of the biggest talking points ahead of the high-profile clash, with multiple reports indicating that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter is “close” to making his comeback.
According to the latest updates, Dhoni has been recovering from a calf strain that kept him out of the initial phase of the tournament. Reports suggest that he is now nearing full match fitness and is “likely” to be available for selection in the game against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.
Recent on-field developments have also strengthened speculation around his return. Dhoni was seen engaging in wicketkeeping practice sessions ahead of the match, including a rare extended stint behind the stumps in the nets, which lasted around 30–40 minutes. This marked a significant step in his recovery, as he had not been keeping wickets earlier in the season.
His presence in full training, including batting and keeping drills, is being viewed as an indication that he is preparing for a possible comeback. At the same time, his participation has not been formally confirmed by the franchise, leaving the final decision dependent on match-day fitness and the team management’s call.
Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has made a strong statement on Dhoni’s return, expressing full confidence in his participation. “If MS Dhoni is in the squad, I am 100 per cent sure he will play. There is no doubt about that. If he feels he can play, he will definitely take the field,” Ashwin said, underlining that the decision ultimately rests on Dhoni’s own assessment of his fitness.
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings bowling consultant Eric Simons also addressed the situation, offering a cautious but clear update on Dhoni’s condition. “He is working very hard on his fitness. We are taking it day by day. We will see how he pulls up and then make a call,” Simons said. He added that the team management is monitoring Dhoni closely and will not rush his return, stating, “We want to make sure he is completely ready before he comes back.”
