Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has confirmed that he will open the batting alongside Sanju Samson in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season, bringing an end to weeks of speculation about the franchise’s top-order combination.
The announcement came during the Captains Day event held in Mumbai on Wednesday, where Gaikwad addressed the much-debated question of who would fill the two opening slots from a pool of three contenders himself, Samson, and emerging talent Ayush Mhatre.
“Rutu and Sanju,” Gaikwad stated when asked about the opening combination, settling the matter with characteristic brevity.
A Strategic Overhaul After Disappointing 2025 Season
The decision marks a significant tactical shift for the five-time champions, who endured considerable instability at the top of the order during their 2025 campaign. CSK experimented with multiple opening partnerships last season, trying combinations involving Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Rahul Tripathi, but none delivered the consistency the franchise sought.
Gaikwad himself batted at number three for a substantial portion of the previous season as the team searched for a reliable formula. The struggles at the top were evident throughout the campaign, with CSK unable to establish the solid foundations that have historically defined their batting approach.
The acquisition of Samson through a high-profile trade from Rajasthan Royals one of the most significant player exchanges in IPL history has now provided CSK with the opportunity to construct a more balanced and experienced opening pair.
Samson Arrives with Enhanced Credentials
Samson’s value has increased considerably following his match-winning performances in India’s recent T20 World Cup triumph. The wicketkeeper-batter delivered scores of 89, 89, and an unbeaten 97 in three consecutive must-win matches, earning him the Player of the Tournament award and cementing his reputation as a performer for high-pressure situations.
His inclusion gives CSK a potent combination of Gaikwad’s consistency and accumulation skills paired with Samson’s explosive stroke-making ability. Both players bring substantial IPL experience and the temperament to handle the demands of the powerplay phase.
Mhatre Pushed Down the Order
The confirmed opening pair means young sensation Ayush Mhatre will move down the batting order despite an impressive breakthrough in IPL 2025. The 18-year-old accumulated 240 runs in just seven innings at a strike rate exceeding 188 while opening, establishing himself as one of the finds of the tournament.
Mhatre, who captained India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup in February, was retained by CSK ahead of the 2026 auction. While the youngster will no longer open, his promotion through the middle order could provide CSK with flexibility and firepower in the crucial middle overs.
Expectations for the Season Ahead
The Gaikwad-Samson partnership represents CSK’s commitment to building a formidable top order that can set the tone for their innings from the first ball. With Samson’s ability to accelerate against pace in the powerplay and Gaikwad’s capacity to anchor innings while scoring at a healthy rate, CSK appear well-positioned to address last season’s shortcomings.
CSK will look to this new opening combination to provide the platform their star-studded middle order requires. As IPL 2026 approaches, the franchise’s faithful will hope this partnership can help restore the dominant batting performances that have characterised their most successful campaigns.
