India’s wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is facing scrutiny from the International Cricket Council (ICC) following his celebration after a match-winning innings in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight clash against the West Indies. Sanju Samson is under review by the ICC with the possibility of disciplinary action ahead of India’s semi-final against England at Wankhede Stadium.

Samson played a pivotal role in India’s victory over the West Indies, scoring an unbeaten 97 off 50 balls to guide his team to a five-wicket win and secure a place in the semi-finals. The innings included 12 fours and four sixes. Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar described the knock as that of a “sincere cricketer.”

After hitting the winning boundary, Samson removed his helmet and threw it toward the ground. He then went down on his knees and raised his hands. Broadcast footage captured the celebration, and the visuals were widely circulated on social media.

The ICC Code of Conduct outlines rules regarding player behaviour. Article 2.2 covers “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing.” It states that throwing equipment such as bats or helmets can constitute a Level 1 offence. A Level 1 breach can result in an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50 per cent of the match fee, and one or two demerit points. The accumulation of demerit points over a 24-month period can lead to suspension.

Reports indicate that match officials have taken note of the incident. The matter is expected to be reviewed by the match referee.

The ICC has not issued an official statement on any disciplinary action.

Sanju Samson spoke briefly about the celebration after the match. He said, “It was a very special moment for me.” He added that the gesture was personal and did not elaborate further.

India will face England in the semi-final on March 5. The match is set to take place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
