“Praggnanandhaa Makes History at Superbet”

Pragg final

The Superbet Classic Chess Tournament was held in Bucharest, Romania, from May 7 to May 16.

India’s young Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa participated in this prestigious event.

Facing intense competition and tough challenges, Praggnanandhaa finished the main rounds with 5.5 points, tying with French Grandmasters Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Alireza Firouzja.

As a result, the tournament proceeded to a tie-breaker, where our boy truly played at another level — on fire in every move!

In the tie-break rounds, Praggnanandhaa scored 1.5 points and emerged as the champion.

This title marks his first-ever championship win in a Grand Chess Tour event — a proud and historic moment for Indian chess.

Adding to the joy, it’s worth celebrating that Praggnanandhaa is also one of the 27 elite athletes supported by the Tamil Nadu Government under the SDAT Elite Sportsperson Scheme, a well-deserved recognition for a rising star.
