Sharmistha Panoly, a law student from Kolkata, has been granted interim bail by the Kolkata High Court in connection with a controversial video she had posted.
In the video, she made statements about “Operation Sindhoor”, questioning why no Bollywood actors or actresses spoke about it, while also making remarks about Muslims that sparked widespread outrage.
Although she later deleted the video, backlash from several organizations and legal complaints led to her arrest by Kolkata Police on May 31.
Following her arrest, she filed a bail plea with the Kolkata High Court.
After reviewing the petition, Justice Raja Basu Choudhury stated that no cognizable offence was made out based on the complaint, and hence granted her interim bail on personal bond.
Bail Conditions:
- A personal bond of ₹10,000
- She must not leave the country without the court’s permission
This decision has brought fresh attention to the balance between freedom of expression and communal harmony in the age of social media.
