The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has strongly condemned social media posts targeting Sangeetha, the wife of actor-politician Vijay, describing the online attacks as “digital violence” against women. The organisation also criticised Vijay for remaining silent on the matter.

In a statement, AIDWA said that Sangeetha’s decision to file for divorce in the family court in Chengalpattu is a private legal matter. It stated that no one has the right to post lewd or defamatory content about her or her personal life on social media. The statement emphasised that “a woman seeking divorce through the court is an issue for the individuals and the judiciary alone,” and that such matters should not become the subject of obscene debate on digital platforms.

AIDWA said that posts and memes circulated by supporters linked to Vijay’s TVK have repeatedly targeted Sangeetha online. In its press release, the association described these posts as “obscene, derogatory and reflective of a misogynistic mindset,” and stressed that such content does not fall under legitimate expression. It added that targeting a woman’s personal life on social media amounts to violence against women, not free speech.

The association called on the cybercrime wing of the police to take swift action to curb the spread of abusive content and to investigate those responsible. AIDWA also stated that Vijay, as a public figure and political leader, should clearly speak out against such attacks rather than remain silent, and that silence could be perceived as tacit approval of the behaviour.

The organisation urged civil society and political leaders to take a firm stand against the circulation of sexually explicit or defamatory material targeting women, and reiterated that a person’s marital dispute should not be reduced to public ridicule or online harassment.
