As polling is held for the 2026 Assembly Elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, the Election Commission has reiterated that voters do not need to carry a Voter ID card to cast their vote, as long as their name is present in the official electoral roll. The clarification has been issued to ensure that no eligible voter is turned away from polling stations on voting day.

Election authorities have stated that the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) is only one of several acceptable identity proofs. “The presence of a voter’s name in the electoral roll is the primary condition. Any one of the approved documents can be used to establish identity,” officials have said in line with standard polling guidelines.

To facilitate smooth voting, the Election Commission has approved a list of twelve alternative identity documents that voters can present at polling booths. These documents are widely recognized and issued by various government authorities:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Job Card issued under MGNREGA
  • Bank or Post Office Passbook with photograph
  • Health Insurance Smart Card issued under government schemes
  • Driving Licence
  • PAN Card
  • Smart Card issued under National Population Register (NPR)
  • Indian Passport
  • Pension Document with photograph
  • Service Identity Card issued by Central/State Government/Public Sector Undertakings
  • Official Identity Cards issued to MPs, MLAs, and MLCs
  • Unique Disability ID (UDID) Card

Officials have instructed polling personnel in both Tamil Nadu and West Bengal to accept any one of these documents for identity verification, provided the voter’s name is listed in the electoral roll. This provision is aimed at ensuring maximum participation and preventing inconvenience for voters who may not possess their voter ID card on polling day.

With crores of voters heading to polling booths across the two states, authorities have urged citizens to verify their names in the voter list in advance and carry at least one valid identity document.
