A striking creative rumour is doing the rounds across Tamil film circles: Dhanush, one of Tamil cinema’s most bankable stars, is set to step behind the camera once again and his directorial project will star Mrunal Thakur in the lead role. The project is a women-centric period drama set against a 1970s backdrop, with Mrunal reportedly playing the role of a Goddess figure. It has been reported that a look test on the actress was conducted recently by the production team.
The film rumoured to be produced by Dhanush’s own banner, Wunderbar Films, with music composed by GV Prakash Kumar, a creative association between the two that has delivered several notable soundtracks. An official announcement from the production is expected in the coming weeks.
The project carries significance on multiple levels. As a director, Dhanush’s previous outing was Idly Kadai, a deeply personal drama that announced a genuine sensibility behind the camera patient, emotionally layered, and far removed from the commercial genre templates he typically inhabits as an actor.
Choosing a women-centric period film with Mrunal Thakur as his vehicle is a bold pivot. Mrunal, who has built a reputation in both Telugu and Hindi cinema for performances of considerable range from Jersey to Sita Ramam to her recent OTT work brings precisely the kind of crossover profile that would serve a Tamil film seeking national visibility. The 1970s period setting, combined with the mythological dimension of a Goddess-linked character, positions the film as a departure from anything in Dhanush’s previous work as a director and as an actor.
The announcement also arrives against the colourful backdrop of months of public speculation about Dhanush and Mrunal’s personal relationship rumours both have firmly denied and dismissed. The professional collaboration now confirmed separately from all personal rumour underlines what their camps have maintained throughout.
As an actor, Dhanush’s plate is already strikingly full. His next theatrical release, Kara, a 1990s-set bank robber drama directed by Vignesh Raja arrives on April 30. Beyond that, his confirmed lineup includes D55 with director Rajkumar Periasamy, D56 with Tamilarasan Pachamuthu (currently filming), a reunion with Mari Selvaraj (slated to begin September 2026), and the long-awaited Vada Chennai 2 with Vetrimaaran. Threading a directorial commitment through this schedule will require careful coordination.
