Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday presented a detailed numerical breakdown of the proposed Lok Sabha seat distribution following delimitation, placing specific emphasis on southern states, including Tamil Nadu, as part of the broader expansion of Parliament.

According to Amit Shah, Tamil Nadu’s Lok Sabha representation is projected to increase from 39 seats to 59 seats after delimitation. He stated that the state’s share in the total strength of the House would also rise slightly from about 7.18 per cent to approximately 7.23 per cent, reflecting both numerical and proportional growth.

Providing a wider regional context, Amit Shah said Karnataka is expected to see its seats increase from 28 to 42, with its share remaining broadly stable at around 5.1 per cent. Andhra Pradesh is projected to rise from 25 to 38 seats, with its share moving marginally from about 4.6 per cent to 4.65 per cent. Telangana is expected to go from 17 to 26 seats, with its share increasing from 3.13 per cent to 3.18 per cent. Kerala is projected to increase from 20 to 30 seats, while its share remains nearly unchanged at around 3.67 per cent.

Amit Shah stated that across these five southern states, the total number of Lok Sabha seats would increase from the current 129 to 195. He added that the combined share of these states in the Lok Sabha would also see a slight rise, from 23.76 per cent to 23.87 per cent.

He explained that these projections are based on a proposed expansion of the Lok Sabha from 543 seats to over 800 seats. According to Amit Shah, the exercise is designed to ensure that every state sees an increase in representation as part of the restructuring of constituencies.
