On an evening when Tamil Nadu was at the polls, Chennai Super Kings were delivering a different kind of mandate a thunderous, record-shattering 103-run demolition of Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 23, their largest-ever victory by runs in IPL history, and Mumbai’s worst defeat in the tournament’s nineteen-year history.

The architect, again, was Sanju Samson. His unbeaten 101, his second century of IPL 2026 and fifth overall was the spine of CSK’s 207 for 6, after Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field. The Wankhede is Samson’s house now: this was his first IPL hundred at the ground, and it arrived with a poetic edge against the very team whose star-studded attack he dismantled ball by ball.

CSK were 50 in 3.6 overs and 73 for 2 at the strategic timeout Samson already 31 and still accelerating. Sarfaraz Khan and Ruturaj both contributed and both fell, but Dewald Brevis swatted his way to a handy cameo before departing. It fell to Samson to carry the innings across the 200-run line, which he did in the last over, finishing unbeaten on 101 as the team closed at 207 for 6.

Mumbai’s chase never got started. CSK’s bowlers dismantled the top order inside three overs, restricting Mumbai to their second-lowest powerplay total of IPL 2026. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav fought back to offer a brief, nervous middle-order resistance Varma scoring 37 before a miscued shot off Akeal Hosein crashed onto his stumps. But by the time Hosein had taken his third wicket and Noor Ahmad had claimed two in two balls sending Hardik Pandya back for a low score and Sherfane Rutherford for a golden duck the match was long over as a contest. Hosein finished with four wickets. Mumbai were bowled out for 104.

There was a deeply human dimension to the evening. Mukesh Choudhary, playing just days after the death of his mother, took an early wicket. The applause that greeted it from teammates and crowd alike carried more than cricketing appreciation.

Samson, picking up the Player of the Match award, was measured in his assessment. “The wicket wasn’t a normal Wankhede wicket today,” he said. “I tried to keep things simple.” Simple, at 101 off 64 balls with six fours and six sixes, is a relative term.

Hardik Pandya, whose captaincy is now under serious scrutiny after a string of poor results, was direct in his appraisal: “The powerplay, losing early wickets it’s always going to be tricky. We couldn’t cope after that. They batted on the same pitch. Just that Sanju played an outstanding knock. We have to go back to the drawing board.”

The win fires CSK up to fifth on the IPL 2026 points table. For Mumbai, it is their third consecutive defeat at the Wankhede in a single season a first in the franchise’s history. A campaign that had promised so much now shows a team in serious need of answers.
