The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had stated that the CBCID could carry out the investigation.
However, the Tamil Nadu government, not wanting to allow the opposition parties to politicize the issue, has welcomed the transfer to CBI without any delay.
The state government has also assured that it will extend full cooperation to the investigation.
In an official statement issued by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, he said,
“There is no disagreement that this is an indefensible crime, and on the very day of the incident, six police personnel involved were placed under suspension.”
So far, five police officers have been arrested, and the statement further stressed,
“I want to make it clear as a warning that such mistakes should never occur again in any era.”
